Health and Healing in Nature
At Tamarack, health and healing are the foundations of our center, not only for wildlife but for staff and volunteers alike. While much of the work at Tamarack happens indoors, a lunch break on the deck can quickly immerse us in the rhythms of the natural world – from leaves rustling in the breeze to the soft trickling of the nearby creek to birdsongs above. We are reminded daily of the healing power nature offers—not just to wildlife, but to all of us.
Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature offers powerful mental health benefits. Studies have shown that even brief periods in natural settings can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance focus and creativity. Nature provides a break from the constant stimulation of modern life, allowing our minds to rest and recharge. Whether it’s a walk through the woods, birdwatching, working in a garden, or simply feeling the sun on your face, these moments can lower anxiety and increase feelings of well-being. In a world that often moves too fast, nature invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect.
Our team at Tamarack finds many ways to connect with nature during our precious free time. Melissa (Outreach and Education Manager) finds peace spending time near water, reading a book on the banks of a creek, or paddling in her kayak. Jess (Wildlife Rehab Manager) unwinds by walking her dog on her favorite local trails. Barbara (Office Manager) starts her mornings with a cup of coffee on her deck, immersed in bird songs. Madison (Wildlife Rehab Assistant) spends warm, rainy evenings scanning roadways and under logs for unique local amphibian species. And Carol (Executive Director) finds rejuvenation any time she is outdoors running, hiking, or paddling while feeling the wind and seeing the sky overhead.
The possibilities for connecting with the natural world are limitless. We encourage you to spend time outside this summer, engaging in the activities that you enjoy most and discovering the magical moments, both big and small, that nature has to offer. Every unique moment reminds us that we are all a part of something much larger that is meant to bring us joy. May the natural world lift your spirits, restore your energy, and offer you the same healing moments we experience every day at Tamarack.
